Torvalds rejects the register complaint due to the 5.13 release deviating from the norm

Linux creator Linus Torvalds has doused claims made by the UK tech news site with cold water The registry that the release of the 5.13 kernel was in some way unusual.

The side carried a story on Sunday, which means that the 5.13 kernel was released after fewer release candidates than normal. The headline read: “Linus Torvalds brings Linux 5.13 to market after only seven release candidates.”

But Torvalds told it iTWire that seven release candidates will become the standard for several years.

“There’s no specific reason for it, it just seems to be what works – enough to find problems and not so many to postpone release,” he replied when asked if seven release candidates were in any way unusual .

The registry did not provide any figures to show that the number of release candidates for the 5.13 kernel was in any way different.

Said Torvalds: “It [the number of release candidates] wavered a decade ago when the Merge Window model was fairly new. So back then we had a couple of releases with only five or six release candidates.

“But we also had a bunch of releases by eight or nine. As time went on, as people got more used to the cadence of the merge window, things just stabilized.”

Torvalds takes care of kernel development from his home in Portland. Oregon.

“Over the years, the seven release candidates have grown to the ‘expected number’ when things go normal, and then we occasionally have an extra week and an extra release candidate if there are questions about late fixes,” added he added.

“The last time we had more than that was 4.15 which went to nine, but that was over three years so that’s rare.

“So 5.13 looks normal. Sure, there may be some surprises lurking that we just didn’t catch, but overall it looks smooth, especially considering how big the merge window was.”
