Vivaldi web browser today announced its dedicated application for Google’s recently launched Android automotive OS platform. With this launch, the company claims to be the first to introduce a web browser for an Android automotive platform.
The Vivaldi web browser comes in Polestar 2 cars (from the manufacturers of Volvo). For the uninitiated, the integration of a full-fledged web browser in the car allows users to browse the internet as if they were on their mobile devices.
The app brings full browser functionality to the 11-inch center display with Android Automotive OS in the car and works in a similar way to a mobile device – with tabbed browsing, streaming capability, online shopping and security measures. The company said the browser includes a built-in ad blocker, privacy-friendly translation tool, note-taking function, tracking protection and an encrypted sync function.
It should be noted that, for security reasons, the browser can only be used when it is parked. Content streaming will only resume with audio when the ride starts. Some restrictions may apply, for example files cannot be downloaded.
The company claims that no private browsing data is stored by the car. When you are signed in to a Vivaldi account, browsing data is shared between other devices that are signed in to the same account, but the data is not shared with Polestar.
The Vivaldi browser for Polestar 2 is now available in all European, North American, and Asia Pacific markets. Vivaldi for Android Automotive OS is updated regularly along with its other supported platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux and Android).
This functionality is now unavailable in India, but it opens up many opportunities for more car companies.
