What is Stremio?
Stremio is a lesser-known alternative to Kodi that lets you stream movies and TV shows for free. Unlike many shady apps out there, Stremio is reliable and safe. However, since it is not the most popular streaming tool, you might find it difficult to find a reliable source of information about Stremio.
You can also watch web channels, sports and TV channels or listen to podcasts on Stremio. None of the content is owned by Stremio; It’s just a media center application that lets you watch content from different streaming platforms. It can also stream content via torrent files and magnet links, eliminating the need to download the content to your computer.
Is Stremio free?
Yes, Stremio is a completely free, open-source tool. The download is free and there are no in-app purchases. You can stream content for free and install add-ons for free. Stremio keeps its operations running by serving non-intrusive advertisements. The founding team owns an advertising company called AdEx (a separate legal entity) focused on ads that are transparent and respect privacy.
Is Stremio legal?
Yes, Stremio is legal. It’s simply a platform that allows streaming from other streaming platforms and sources over a P2P network.
Stremio is a legitimate app available on Apple App Store and Google Play Store. While using P2P networks is not illegal, streaming copyrighted content without permission is illegal and therefore you should use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) when streaming via Stremio.
Should I use a VPN with Stremio?
Yes, you should use a VPN with Stremio to ensure your security and privacy. If you are also streaming pirated content, consider using a VPN to ensure your identity remains anonymous.
VPNs encrypt your internet traffic so no one can intercept it and see what you do online. In some cases where the ISP has throttled your connection speed, using a VPN will also improve the connection speed so you can enjoy buffer-free streaming.
You also need a VPN if you are in a country with heavy censorship. For example, if you are in China, you cannot access Stremio (or other non-Chinese streaming apps) without a VPN.
We recommend ExpressVPN as the best Stremio VPN because it offers top-notch security and doesn’t keep activity logs. It’s also the fastest VPN out there and offers everything you’d expect from a premium VPN.
How to use Stremio
If you’ve never used the Stremio app before, you may need help navigating the interface. While finding content is pretty easy, in order to watch movies, TV shows, or any other available content for free, you need to install relevant add-ons. You can also Create your own Stremio addons if you know how to code Node.js.
Watch a movie or TV show with Stremio
When you start the app you will see the Stremio board with movies and TV shows listed categorically. Go to Discover and search for the content you want to watch.
Click an item and select a source on the right. If you don’t have any Stremio add-ons installed, there’s a good chance you’ll only see options like Netflix and Amazon Pay. If you are not subscribed to any of these streaming platforms, you will need to download Stremio add-ons.
Install Stremio addons
Stremio doesn’t offer as wide a range of add-ons as Kodi. Some add-ons have also been flagged as unsafe in the past. However, you can still install most of the popular Stremio add-ons without any security concerns.
Installing add-ons is pretty easy. Click on the icon that looks like a puzzle piece in the top right. Select a category on the left and click Install for any add-ons you want to install.
Once you install an add-on, Stremio will also search for the movie you want to watch on that particular website. Suppose you try to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home. It scans the streaming platforms you have add-ons installed for (along with defaults like Netflix and iTunes). When the movie is found, it will be listed in the sidebar on the right.
This is how you see Stremio from afar
Stremio also offers some advanced features. For example, if you are not on a device where you have Stremio installed or want to stream on a device where Stremio is not available, such as a Smart TV or Fire TV Stick, you can watch Stremio remotely.
You must first enable remote HTTPS connections from one of the supported devices to set up remote streaming. For Stremio desktop apps, you need to click the ellipsis in the top right corner and select “Settings”. In the left sidebar, go to the “Streaming” tab in the “Settings” menu.
In the right pane you will find an option to “Enable remote HTTPS connections”. Expand the dropdown menu on the right and select one of the IP addresses. When you do this, a new option called “Streaming HTTPS Endpoint” will appear at the bottom. The URL next to it lets you stream the content you want.
Note that you need to keep the app running in order to stream remotely on another device.
Track your watch history with Trakt
Trakt is a free service that allows you to keep track of the content you’re watching. It is also available as an add-on for Kodi and works the same for Stremio.
If you want to use Trakt on Stremio, you first need a Trakt account. Start by creating an account on the Trakt website. Launch Stremio and click the ellipsis in the top right corner. Select “Settings” and then click the “Authenticate” button under “Trakt Scrobbling”.
Click the button to go to the Trakt website. Sign in to your Trakt account to allow Stremio to access the account. Once everything is set up, everything you see on Stremio should also appear in your Trakt watch history.
The Stremio calendar
Stremio goes one step further with the integrated calendar. While Trakt can track the content you’re watching, the calendar takes a proactive approach and tells you the release date of the next episode for the TV shows you’re interested in.
You can let Stremio fill the calendar with the TV shows of your choice in several ways:
- Select “TV Shows” from the “Discover” section on Stremio
- Import a list of shows from your Trakt clock history
- Import a list of shows based on shows you’ve liked on Facebook
After adding shows to the Stremio calendar, you can also import the calendar to your default calendar app. To do this, click on the ellipse symbol and then on “Subscribe to calendar”. Do you miss new episodes? No more.
